The Battle of The Bands (BOTB) is your
basic Which-do-you-like-best contest where the one that gets the most votes
wins. All you have to do is show up (the 1st and/or 15th
of every month) give a listen and cast your vote in the comment section. Next, hop on over to
see what battles other participants (links located top right column of this
page) have posted for us to vote on! Votes will
be tallied and the winner revealed on or about 8 days later.
I hope your summer is off to a fantastic start! Having recently attended a High School Graduation ceremony - what a crowd! - I couldn't help but remember the 'old days' when the very mention of the word "Summer" made us all anxious for that last school bell to ring already! It didn't even matter if we had plans, as long as we had parks and boulevards ;-)
Did you catch my theme there? Coming up are two songs that always, ALWAYS get me into the summer mood. Let's see if they do anything for you ;-)

And there you have it, folks! Did we stir up any memories? Do you know - without peeking - or care to guess which of these songs was a B-Side hit? Let me know what you think, along with your (much-appreciated) vote in the comment section below.
Happy tunes in June!
The Dupree song sounds like it would have been an A side. I do remember it, but it doesn't tap into my experiences of the times so much. We were listening to a lot of Doobies back in my day. I also think it might have been a B side even though I used to hear this song a lot.
ReplyDeleteFor me, it's the Doobie Brothers. This is just more my type of music. Still sounds good to me!
Lee
Hi Lee! The Dupree song has always made me think of California, though there was plenty of cruising going around here ;-) Then again, there was a lot of Doobie Bros. music playing at the parks too. A first nod to the Doobies - thank you!
DeleteI had to listen to both twice to make sure but I will go with the 2nd one. The Doobie Bros. Are excellent but it made me feel sad because kids don't hang out like they used to...they are all on their phones, being upset about everything a d most know Jack all about anything history. The 2nd song made me think of my fun summers.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean, Birgit. Yeah, kids these days don't seem to know what they're missing. I wouldn't trade those days for anything ;-) A vote for Hot Rod Hearts - thank you!
DeleteHowdy, dIEDRE ~
ReplyDeleteNice theme. I have so many wonderful memories of growing up in SoCal before it got ruined, and there are many songs that instantly "Waybac Machine" me to those cool times! The beaches, the piers and, yes, the parks, too.
'Saturday In The Park' by Chicago (I'm taken back to El Segundo park on July 4th, 1976); 'Summer' and 'All Day Music' by War (I'm back on Venice Beach, or playing baseball in Little League); 'Summer Breeze' by Seals & Crofts (listening to the Dodger game with Vin Scully's voice coming through a transistor radio sitting on the front porch while we play in the street); 'Old Days' by Chicago (pretty much captures the entirety of my youth), etc., etc., and so on and so forth...
I don't recall hearing the Robbie Dupree song before, but I liked it. It reminded me of some other songs. Although I've always liked the Doobie Bros., I'm just kind of "Eh" about that particular song (which I believe was a B side).
A full album that unleashes a lot of memories for me is [Link> NOT SHY by Walter Egan.
Have a bitchin' Summer, dIEDRE! See you in September.
(As one would have written in a yearbook on the last day of school.)

Hi, Stephen T.!
DeleteNice recap of the wonders of youthful summers ;-) And, oh yeah, Chicago, Seals & Croft - even America (Ventura Highway) - all excellent reminders of heartfelt memories that every kid ought to have.
Good guess, by the way.
A vote for Robbie Dupree (I am I right?), Thank you!
Diedre,
ReplyDeleteI couldn't tell you which song was a side B hit but I can tell you this the song that puts me in a summer state of mind from way back when is the Doobie Brothers. I am reminded of the summers spent with my uncle and his wife. Every evening, he'd spin some records and frequently would leave an album playing as I drifted off to sleep.
Robert Dupree's song came out in the early 80s in the early years of our marriage and while it does say summer, it doesn't touch me quite like contender number 1 does. Please give my vote to the Doobie Brothers!
I can't believe it's June already. The years is passing so quickly. Have a bandtastic week, my friend! xo
Hi Cathy! Can't you almost feel the early evening breeze in your hair as the old fireball finally sinks to backlight the mountains? A vote for the Doobies - thank you, my dear!
DeleteJune already! I barely remember May - ha!
I don't know either song, but they both suit the season well. We had a colder than normal May and are only now getting some real summer weather. I preferred the Robbie Dupree tune. It has that happy toe-tapping quality. ☺
ReplyDeleteHi Debbie!
DeleteI'd be happy to share some of high temps we've been getting. We've also had some rain, which was wonderful, so I really shouldn't complain.
Another vote for Hot Rod Hearts! Thank you ;-)
VOTE = DOOBIE BROTHERS
ReplyDeleteRough, Diedre! Two of my favorite artists, and two of my favorite songs!! I don't even know if I can explain how I came to a decision on this one. I think I closed my eyes and tossed an imaginary coin in my mind. Sheesh! ~Ed.
Ha! I might have to toss the imaginary coin myself ;-)
DeleteThanks for your vote, Ed!
Wow. Those take me back. Came looking for an IWSG post and found this. Score! LOL
ReplyDeleteHi Melissa! Can't say I'm sorry you found me ;-) You can still cast a vote (until tomorrow) for your favorite, if you care to. There are more battles going on as well. The links are located in top right column of this page.
DeleteHope you found me at Pensivepenspost.blogspot.com
I enjoyed both songs, but my vote is for Dupree. It reminded me of Speedway Blvd. And my first ticket, loitering. Haha
ReplyDeleteThose were some good summers 🥰
Ha! How well I remember Speedway Blvd. - A vote for Hot Rod Hearts - thank you, Dana E.!
