Battle of The Bands - August 2024

Hey, hi! Glad you stopped by ;-)

The Battle of The Bands (BOTB) is your basic Which-do-you-like-best contest where the one that gets the most votes wins. All you have to do is show up (the 1st and/or 15th of every month) give a listen and cast your vote in the comment section. Votes will be tallied and the winner revealed on or about 8 days later.

On the roster for today were two covers of an epic song by Motown's own King of Soul, Marvin Gaye, but that wasn't happening, so I'm back to thinking about all the glorious rain we've been getting!

First up:

There you have it, folks! Which do you like best? And how come? Let me know in the comment section below. Oh! And, before you go, hop around and see the rest of today’s battles (participating sites are located in the top right sidebar of this page)

Happy August, everybody! Be sure to join us on the 8th for Battle of the Bands results and a special birthday celebration of our favorite Emcee!

  1. July was such a rainy month for us but it usually is, though. I hope it's behind us for awhile. We simply haven't been able to get any yard work done because of it. You used two good songs for this battle. I'm going with The Cascades "Rhythm of the Rain". It has such a cheery vibe. :) Have a bandtastic day, Deidre!

    1. Hi Cathy!
Out here in Southern Arizona where lizards race across the blacktop to pant for awhile in the shade of Ocotillo branches we are overjoyed at every drop of rain ;-)
Glad you like the songs ;-) Thanks for your vote for the Cascades.

  2. Excellent battle today! Am happy for the rain to come clear out the smoky air here. I'm voting nostalgic today - Bruce Hornsby & The Range takes me right back to an easier time in my life. I loved this album and played it to death - and I can still recall the memory of walking past the General Manager's very fancy car - and taking a peep in the window to check out the interior - and he also had this cassette on the seat. I felt instant connection with the big boss. Silly, I know. But Bruce Hornsby gets my vote again today!

    1. Hi Mary!
Oh, Ugh. Yes, let it rain - and be at least a little windy for you - the smoke your way must be horrendous! I'd been humming the Cascades song for a couple days, then my radio station played Bruce Hornsby and I had my battle laid out ;-)
Ha! Your manager had your taste in music - like they say, "Great minds think alike,"
Gotcha down for Bruce - thanks, my dear!

  3. Somewhere I've got the Bruce Hornsby album on CD so I've listened to this song so many times and it's still great to hear. I think it's a superior song...And yet, that Cascades song is so ingrained in my psyche that I have to go with them and all the memories that brings back.

    1. Yep, nestled right there between nostalgic and timeless are songs like both of these I think. Thanks for your vote, Lee.

  4. VOTE = BRUCE HORNSBY

You made it tough though, Diedre! Rhythm of the Rain: I have known and sung along with - and sometimes sung acapella, with or without family joining in - since I knee-high to a grasshopper. BUT! But, Mandolin Rain is way up high on my fave song list (which does not actually exist). I could listen (and sing along with) this song repeatedly, and loudly. I have it on several of my Spotify playlists. Among other things, Bruce's piano - mmhmm. ~Ed.

    1. I know exactly how you feel! And having to choose is tough for me as well. Guess I stepped outta my slipper on this one ;-) Thanks for your vote! Now I think I'll pester my sister to play Mandolin Rain for me...

  5. They're both favorites of mine, so I'll go with The Cascades.

  6. Hi diedre, happy August! ☺ We had torrential rains and incredible heat and humidity in July. Florida weather in Canada. Go figure!

Your second video is not available in Canada, but I deduced from the others' comments that it is Bruce Hornsby's 'Mandolin Rain'. Here's an alternate, in case anyone else has trouble: LINK. As for my vote, it was tough, because the first song is totally ingrained, but I was more attracted to Mandolin Rain.

  7. Hi, Debbie!
Not available in Canada? What the? How can I tell if and when that happens? Thanks for the link - and the vote!
I hope the weather straightens up for you ;-)

    1. Yes, it's a pain-in-the-ass, but countries have differing copyright laws. There is a site you can use. Copy and paste your YouTube link into it, and voila! It gives you details of which countries are restricted, if any. YouTube Region Checker

We've had less rain lately, but everything is overgrown, including the insect population. 😕 Still very hot, but I don't mind that.

When I first started BOTBing (in that other lifetime somewhere yonder), I found that the YouTube Region Checker (that Debbie linked you to) was frequently wrong.

However, as the years have gone on, that thing has become extraordinarily reliable. It's probably the *ONLY* thing I can think of that has improved with time. I always check all of my BOTB videos at that site prior to posting, to make certain that our Canadian friends won't be left out. Surprisingly, you can now count on its accuracy.

I have always really liked 'Rhythm Of The Rain' by The Cascades! It almost sounds Buddy Holly-like to me, and I've said that it could have very easily worked in the soundtrack of 'American Graffiti', which is amongst my all-time favorite movies.

Judge Al said he had never heard 'Mandolin Rain', and although he liked it and felt it could easily grow on him, he slightly preferred 'Rhythm Of The Rain', which he was very familiar with.

As for me - to be snarkily honest (is "snarkily" a real word?) - I have never gotten the Bruce Hornsby popularity. I've always thought this:

Q: "What do you get if you cross Jackson Browne with 50 milligrams of Diphenhydramine HCl?"

A: "Bruce Hornsby and a good night's sleep."

It's not that I dislike Hornsby's songs. Because, to my ears, there's not even enough "there" there to dislike. It would be like disliking the color grey or cardboard.

OK, my work is done here.

In case you fell asleep while reading that, here's the pertinent summary:
One vote & one rulin' for The Cascades.
