BOTB April 2025 Garden Party

Hey, hi! Glad you stopped by ;-)

The Battle of The Bands (BOTB) is your basic Which-do-you-like-best contest where the one that gets the most votes wins. All you have to do is show up (the 1st of every month) give a listen and cast your vote in the comment section. Votes will be tallied and the winner revealed on or about the 8th day of the month.

It's hard to believe that one stinker of a concert, attended by some who were glad to oblige—the operative word here—caused Rick Nelson such distress that he went home and wrote one of the defining songs of his career—just when it seemed to be winding down!

For your discerning musical tastes (and coveted votes), I present to you two covers of Garden Party:

Adam Young - Owl City

The Pickups:

There you have it folks! Enjoy the festivities! I appreciate everyone coming by to give a listen and cast a vote in the comment section. Stop by the links of other participants (located in righthand sidebar) if ya would 😉

Oh, and also if you would; let me know your thoughts about all the pop-up commercials...

  1. My vote goes to THE PICKUPS! They have a more traditional sound which sold me. My battle goes live at noon today. Stop by when you get a chance, my dear. Have a bandtastic day! xo

  2. Not sure what you're talking about with pop-up commercials. Didn't see any on your blog, but I don't like running across them when I do.

The second cover was a pleasant sounding cover, but the version by Owl City is more inventive and I liked the sound. I even used that version in a Battle back in 2015. I'll give my vote for Owl City. I love this song and Rick Nelson's music in general. He was a fine artist.

    1. Yep. I get so many pop-ups I just want to toss my laptop out of the window. I was afraid one or two would pop-up after I scheduled my post. Guess I got lucky. I'll have to figure something out.
I forgot how much I enjoyed Nelson in the "oldie" days and was shocked that there are such rude people out there (the ones who booed him, causing him to write the Garden Party).
A vote for Owl City - thanks, Arlee!

  3. Howdy, dIEDRE ~

How are things yonder in the Old West?

I've always liked Ricky Nelson. One of my very favorite '50s rockers -- in there with Eddie Cochran (#1) and Chuck Berry. And I've always liked his song 'Garden Party'. That great line has been a semi-philosophical foundation of my life for many decades: "You can't please *everyone*, so you've got to please yourself". (I'm as Lone Wolf as Lone Wolf can get!)

The Adam Young cover wasn't bad, but I wasn't crazy about the synthesized-sounding "beat" counter (or, "fake handclap sound"). I preferred the more organic-sounding version by THE PICKUPS.

Judge Al Bondigas said he thought the first cover sounded a bit too "bland", and he made a rulin' for THE PICKUPS.

That Judge Al, he sho is a rebel, ain't he? Elon Musk & his DOGE gang told Judge Al that he was fired, and yet Judge Al ignored them and made a rulin' here. If only the entire country understood that the Supreme Court of this country cements nothing, and submits mere "opinions". But, alas, at this late stage in the game, expecting We The People to become "Constitutionally knowledgeable" is expecting way too much. I mean, after all, there are Kardashians to think about!

    1. POSTSCRIPT:
I have AdBlock Plus installed on my computer, so I didn't see any pop-up ads here (nor do I see them anywhere -- except at YouTube, which won't work unless I disable ABP when I go to that site).

    2. I like your thinking, 'Wolfie', and Judge Al can rule over here any time ;-) Two for the Pickups! Thanks, guys.
I recently added an Adblocker but I guess I need to specify who to block - sheesh...

  4. VOTE = ADAM YOUNG

Although I enjoyed the simple, acoustic, folksy version of The Pickups - including their vocal harmonies and echoes - the Adam Young/Owl City version won out for me primarily because of his key changes. I also actually liked the synthesizer accompaniments.

My BOTB is a day late, but it is up and available now:
