BOTB May 2025 Bus Stop

Hey, hi! Glad you stopped by ;-)

The Battle of The Bands (BOTB) is your basic Which-do-you-like-best contest where the one that gets the most votes wins. All you have to do is show up (the 1st and/or 15th of every month) give a listen and cast your vote in the comment section. Next, hop on over to see what battles other participants (links located top right column of this page) have posted for us to vote on! Votes will be tallied and the winner revealed on or about 8 days later.

Happy tunes in May!

Do we have any other sing-to-the-radio Rock Stars out there? No? Just me? So it is ;-) I’ve never regretted a minute – or a song. One of the most memorable “performances” I ever gave was on the ride home from a ballpark where my best friend’s team had won, leaving us both in higher spirits than we’d started with after deciding to venture clear across town after work for her to play for a team she didn’t care about while I watched a game (softball) I didn’t even like (for her sake.).  Anyhow, a favorite oldie song came on the radio during the drive home, and I sang it loud and proud, start to finish, without ever realizing until it was all said, sung, and done that for some strange reason, the words to the song hadn’t played – only the music. My friend was impressed and asked for an encore, but I’d embarrassed myself enough for one day ;-)

While a link to the favorite oldie can be found above (purple), here are a couple of contenders you can choose between, see who you’d let sing in your car ;-)

 First up:  Gene Pitney

Next: Robson Field

Happy listening! See you all in a few days.

  1. Love this song! Never heard a cover of it that I can recall, but both of these were quite good.

I've long been a fan of Gene Pitney and I like what he did with the song best. Give my vote to Gene.

    1. Hi Lee! I probably wouldn't have ever imagined a cover for this song if not for Battle of the Bands ;-) A vote for Gene Pitney - thank you!

  2. My vote goes to Gene Pitney and despite the dangers chocolate eating, it's not enough to stop me. lol

    1. Hi Cathy! Haha! And apparently it doesn't matter (as much as I thought) whether I choose regular or dark chocolate. A vote for Gene Pitney - thank you!

    2. I say, life is too short and should be enjoyed. If eating chocolate makes life more fun then I say go for it! I used to eat a lot more of it than I do nowadays. I'm at the point where I won't die if I don't have any. I didn't think I'd ever see this happening.

I enjoyed reading your short lead-in story. I always like it when a writer adds some personal details to draw me into the subject at hand. I learned that tactic many years ago from a couple of Amazon.com reviewers. The guy wrote a review for the Nazareth album 'Hair Of The Dog', and the woman wrote one for the Tom Waits album 'Nighthawks At The Diner'. I recognized that it was the "personal" touch of those reviews that most interested me. So, later, when I began writing my own Amazon reviews, I routinely employed that some approach, and it made me a VERY popular reviewer at that site.

I don't often sing-a-long (at least, not for more than a line or two) because I don't wish to wreck a good thing. However, the one song that I find it almost impossible NOT to sing-a-long to is 'Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head'. To me, anyway, that song almost seems to demand that the listeners participate.

Hmmm... Seems to me that you may have inadvertently invented karaoke.

Both recordings here were good, but I prefer the deeper, more manly voice of Robson Field. Clearly, he had doubled his voice and was singing along with himself -- or maybe only lip-syncing to his previous recording. But, either way, I preferred the sound of it.

    1. Ha! I appreciate your thoughtful comment ;-) Which, by the way, reminds me I should finish the story - it was an exciting game with my friend's team taking the win.
Proving no hard feelings, the other team bought Pizza and beers!
It sure is quiet around here...
      Check ya later!

  4. I give it to Robson Field because I prefer his vocals to the higher nasal pitched Pitney. Love this song

  5. I could have sworn I commented here a few days ago. Oh well, try again, and hopefully it's not too late to vote. Going with Gene Pitney for the arrangement, even though I'm not crazy about his higher-pitched vocal tone. P.S. I sing along to the radio all the time. Exhilarating, isn't it? 😀 Don't listen to the nay sayers! Chocolate (in moderation, as with all things), is good for you. 🍫

    1. Hi Debbie! Good to see you ;-) I've thought the same thing myself (Didn't I already comment?) lately. I like how you think ;-) If I can't have a radio to sing to in the car, I'd usually rather walk ;-) Thanks so much for coming by to cast a vote!

  6. VOTE = ROBSON FIELD

Whew! Not too late, I hope! I just preferred Robson's voice over Gene's; although I've heard plenty of Gene and never heard of Robson. And I had never heard anyone's version of this song except The Hollies, either! Fun! I always sing along. Anytime. Everywhere. You can't stop me. LOL! ~Ed.

  7. What was it someone said about having to be the tie-breaker? Ugh. My contenders are neck and neck - and deservedly so. I like both renditions. I hate to be disloyal to a grand Old Timer - there isn't a single song by Gene Pitney that I don't like - but in this case, for this song, the new guy; Robson gets my vote for the win! Thanks everyone ;-)

    1. Wow! Interesting to see a basically unknown YouTube-ish guy beat a big name Pop star from the past. But, it's because occasionally the underdog pulls a victory out of his hat that we play this game.

      Very good Battle, dIEDRE!
