BOTB February 1, 2025

Hey, hi! Glad you stopped by ;-)

The Battle of The Bands (BOTB) is your basic Which-do-you-like-best contest where the one that gets the most votes wins. All you have to do is show up (the 1st and/or 15th of every month) give a listen and cast your vote in the comment section. Next, hop on over to see what battles other participants (links located top right column of this page) have posted for us to vote on! Votes will be tallied and the winner revealed on or about 8 days later.

Happy February, everyone! I don’t know where our weather guy gets his information, but I like it! Starting today, temperatures should be in the 80s! My mind has already skipped spring and moved on to summer ;-)

Aw, winter wasn’t all bad. I did manage to watch a few good movies from beneath a blanket on the sofa near the hearth. These movies included such great soundtracks I can’t help but share. I hope you all don’t mind voting on which one of the following trailers leaves the most lasting impression.

Up first:  Carly Simon’s spot-on perspective of “Heartburn,” featuring a couple of America's most prolific actors.

Next up:  Heath Ledger borrows a classic from Frankie Valli and captivates the entire field for the approval of one girl in "10 Things I Hate About You"

That’s it for me this time. I hope you enjoyed the offerings – and don’t forget to swing by the other battles going on today!  (Other participant battle links are located at the top right of this page).

  1. I liked Carly Simon's better for the music. Heath Ledger's was very clever and I enjoyed watching it, but he really couldn't sing. Carly Simon for me.

  2. In the 80s? Well, I'm jealous! 😆 It's 12F here, real feel 1. 🥶

Interesting battle, diedre! I remember the movie "Heartburn", but not the second one. Who knew Heath Ledger could sing so well? He gets my vote today.

    1. Eesh, that is cold! Sending warm thoughts your way ;-) It's a first vote for Heath Ledger! Thanks, Debbie ;-)

  3. In context of watching the film, I'm sure the second clip is more fun. I don't think I've seen either film represented here, but not sure I've missed much.
The Valli song is one I like but not as performed here. The Carly song was such a presence in my first marriage. Loved Carly's music back then. Still do.
I vote for Carly Simon as well as the clip it represents--but only because of the song.

  4. dIEDRE ~

    You're getting pert-tricky here!

I haven't seen either of these movies, and I was unfamiliar with the first song. BUT!... I knew and enjoyed Frankie Valli's 'Can't My Eyes Off Of You' long before I saw it used in that iconic... (yes, "iconic", even though that has recently become the single most overused word in the English language, except for "like") ...scene in 'The Deer Hunter'.

From the first time I saw 'The Deer Hunter' in 1978, that song became permanently intertwined with this classic (and "iconic", too) scene:

[Link> Can't Take My Eyes Off You - Frankie Valli (The Deer Hunter, 4K)

So, here's a connection my mind made:
In the first trailer, we see Meryl Streep. And in the second trailer we hear the song most often associated with 'The Deer Hunter', which was the movie that turned Streep into a famous actress. Her big break was unquestionably 'The Deer Hunter', which I probably saw 10-12 times in the theatres and which was my favorite movie in the late '70s.

Judge Al Bondigas ruled thusly: He likes the Frankie Valli song better than the Carly Simon song. But since he didn't like The Joker's singing, he ruled that the music overruled the imagery, and he brought his gavel down in favor of Carly.

Me, I went the opposite way. Although I'd much rather hear Frankie singing than Heath singing (and because I do like the Valli song better'n the Simon song), I voted for "10 Things I Hate About You", as that clip genuinely made me COL! (Chuckle-Out-Loud!)

    1 rulin' for Carly
    1 vote for Heath

    1. Unfamiliar with Carly Simon? I can't even picture Meryl Streep in a hunting movie;-) Are you teasing? But you do see where the outcome could lead, right?
Anyhow, I accept the rulings (One from each of ya), thanks, guys ;-)

    2. >>... Unfamiliar with Carly Simon? I can't even picture Meryl Streep in a hunting movie;-) Are you teasing?

I would ask the same question of you:
      Are YOU teasing?

Of course I'm familiar with Carly Simon! Every young, "confident heterosexual" male noticed her 'No Secrets' album cover way back when.

I was unfamiliar with *this* particular Carly Simon song, but not unfamiliar with her and some of her other songs, such as 'Anticipation', 'You're So Vain', 'Nobody Does It Better', etc.

You seriously are not familiar with the Vietnam War movie 'The Deer Hunter', winner of five Academy Awards, including 'Best Picture'? The film that turned Robert DeNiro, Christopher Walken, and Meryl Streep into major movie stars?

    3. Serious as a heart attack, my friend. Never saw the film. I enjoyed the clip you shared. Looks like I've missed - or need to see - a good one.

  5. This is tough because Carly is a better singer but Heath puts oompf into it. I'm going with Heath...I still miss him. I like he song better but I won't mind if Carly wins because she's a better singer. Heath gets my vote

    1. "Heath puts more oompf," I'll say! That really is a fun clip. And yes, I'd almost forgotten how talented Carly is. A vote for Heath it is - thanks, Birgit!

  6. I haven't seen either of these films but I know both songs. Despite the big names in "Heartburn", I don't think it's something I'd watch where as "10 Things I Hate About You" is probably the type of movie I'd like to see. Heath gave a good performance and it made me smile but I really like Carly Simons voice and the song is nice, too. So, I'm casting my vote for Carly!

    1. Hi Cathy! I'd heard and loved the song before I saw the film. Carly's song is the perfect accompaniment. I laughed at "Ten Things..." too;-) Another vote Carly - thank you!

  7. VOTE = CARLY SIMON

Much more heart-rending. Heath was fun, but not enough to lure me away from Carly. ~Ed.

  11. Whew! On the winning side again, which I was NOT in my own battle, or in Mary's or Cathy's; but I was in Lee's and Stephen's and Debbie's. Yay! Good battle, Diedre! ~Ed.
