BOTB January 2024 - Results

Hello, everyone! I sure hope it's warmer where you are than it is here in the normally comfortably warm desert. I've given up hope that we'll make it to 50 degrees today and will probably wear a jacket till bedtime. On a brighter note, I know we aren't the only region experiencing winter temperatures, and for once, I can relate. It is, after all, Winter in America. Be safe out there, folks.

Of course, I probably brought this icicle weather on myself, bringing up the Snowbird like I did. But how about that battle? Didn't you just love the contenders? Here's how the ice chips shivered out:

Song:        SNOWBIRD                                                             Votes:

Artist        Anne Murray                                                            6 + 1 = 7

Artist        Burl Ives                                                                               1

Artist        Elvis Presley                                                                         1

Thank you, one and all - once again - for coming around to cast your vote! Don't forget to see how the other battles turned out (top right of this page). That's where I'm headed next. Sharing a little sunshine below.   See you all soon!

BOTB January 2024

Hey, hi! Glad you stopped by ;-)

The Battle of The Bands (BOTB) is your basic Which-do-you-like-best contest where the one that gets the most votes wins. All you have to do is show up (the 1st and/or 15th of every month) give a listen and cast your vote in the comment section. Votes will be tallied and the winner revealed on or about 8 days later.

I sure hope everyone had a pleasant Christmas ;-) Mine was so crazy busy I plumb forgot to come back with the results of my “Special Edition” Christmas battle - despite replaying “Driving home” nearly every day…

Which brings us to results I may have inadvertently insisted on with my enthusiasm for a certain contender – ha! You guys are so sweet. While Bryan Adams couldn’t quite pull it off, he got a few well-deserved cheers. The Ronettes dusted off a couple of memory banks (2 votes), and Chris Rea, drove home for the win (4 votes)! Thank you all for voting ;-)

As for today’s Battle of the Bands, it may have been the surprisingly cold and rainy weather we had here over the holiday that made it easy it choose a song and contenders for another installment of my on-going “For the Birds” theme ;-)

Written and originally performed by Gene MacLellan in 1969,  “Snowbird” was well received and covered by a wide variety of artists (including his own daughter), some famous, some not so much, over the years.

For instance our first contender, Anne Murray; whose cover became the first gold record ever recorded by a Canadian solo female artist. *This was an inaugural song inductee of the Canadian Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2003

Next up, this recording of the song by a guy (Burl Ives) whose name was tossed around quite a bit last month…

And I’m sure that somewhere there’s a code I’d be breaking if I didn’t share this version by Elvis Presley.

There you have it, folks! Which do you like best? And how come? Let me know in the comment section below. Oh! And, before you go, hop around and see the rest of today’s battles (participating sites are located in the top right sidebar of this page)

Happy, happy New Year, Everybody!

See you soon!

BOTB Dec 15th 2023 Because it's Christmas

This is officially a Special Edition since I don't usually post twice a month. But hey, it's Christmas!

First up: A song my daughter introduced me to a week or so ago. I'm glad to know artists are still coming up with new holiday songs ;-)

Next up: A song I can honestly say I hadn't heard before, don't know how or why, but I'm glad I ran across it. It's fast becoming a favorite.

And, because we should have at least a little tradition going on, here's a golden oldie crowd-pleaser for all of us "birds of a feather."

BOTB December 2023 Results

Many thanks to all of you who came around and voted in my For the Birds Battle. This outcome was as surprising as the last, but in a more positive way. It was not a shutout; no one was left pecking the ground dejectedly ;-) Here’s how it all went down:

Christmas is for the Birds             Conway Twitty          1 Vote

The Twelve Days of Christmas    5th Grade Teachers     2 Votes

The Gift                                      Aselin Debison              4 Votes

Merry Christmas, everyone! I'll see ya back here next year as long as they can keep a plug in the jug down south of common sense.

In keeping with my zany “For the Birds” theme, I’ve chosen a couple of light-hearted songs by artists/bands you may not have heard of to compete in today’s battle.

First up, a song written by Pat McManus and Woody Bomer called Christmas Is for the Birds was first released in 1994 on Conway Twitty’s Christmas album for kids. He is accompanied by his granddaughter “Twitty Bird”

Next up, a group of fifth-grade teachers perform an original version of a classic centuries-old song about 23 birds, among other things, for Christmas called The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Lastly, just a really pretty song I thought you might enjoy, called The Gift, by Canadian pop and Celtic music singer Aselin Debison, whose singing career began at age nine at a rally in her hometown of Nova Scotia

BOTB November 2023 RESULTS

Thanks, everyone, for coming around to cast your vote for the first of a few more battles to come with the theme "For The Birds" in common!  * Note to anyone who tried and failed to reach me via email: it quit working a few days ago, and I've yet to figure it out.

In keeping with how the theme came to me in the first place, this battle should have been more predictable - to me, at least. But it was fun to find out ;-)  Here's how it went:

Nellie Furtado - "I'm Like a Bird = 0 votes (She still gets airplay!)

Bob Marley - "Three Little Birds" = 7 votes (including mine)

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

As I mentioned last time, when it comes to predicting battle outcomes, my judgment seems to be “For the birds.” While I pondered this dilemma one morning as cartoons droned on TV after the local news, it occurred to me that the roadrunner might be the smartest bird that ever raced across the desert with Wile E Coyote in full, yet futile pursuit. It was as I considered all the smart birds I knew that a BOTB theme came to me. If you guessed birds, you’re right! But not The Byrds or the Eagles or even Counting Crows. At least, not yet ;-)

First up is a song by Nellie Furtado, who divulged in an interview that her favorite birds are crows because they like shiny things as much as she does.

Next up is a song that very few people haven’t heard ;-) from Bob Marley and the Wailers' ninth album. It has an uplifting refrain that Marley said he heard the birds sing from his porch every morning.

Fun Facts:

Wally Amos was responsible for making more than just cookies famous. Indeed, he was also a talent rep for musical acts such as Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, and Sam Cooke. And that was after he discovered and signed the folk duo Simon and Garfunkel ;-)
