On the roster for today were two covers of an epic song by Motown's own King of Soul, Marvin Gaye, but that wasn't happening, so I'm back to thinking about all the glorious rain we've been getting!

Happy August, everybody! Be sure to join us on the 8th for Battle of the Bands results and a special birthday celebration of our favorite Emcee!
Hi All! Since we last talked, I spent a refreshing
week in the woods where windswept clouds draped antique patterns of fine old
lace across blue denim skies that wouldn’t let on rain was coming till it
suddenly did and had us scrambling for cover. All too soon, though right on
schedule, it was time to brave the blazing sun and trade the towering Pines for
squatty scrubs that seemed to crouch begrudgingly beside long stretches of simmering
blacktop that intersect the lower desert plains.
As I
listened to good ole traveling songs by Creedence Clearwater Revival and EricClapton, I just hoped the temps would be mercifully low when we got home. I’d
heard we had quite a storm that toppled several power lines across one of the
busiest streets on my side of town, so I knew there might be damage. Maybe a
chair blew off the patio? Nah, too simple.
It’s National
A/C Appreciation Week, and don’t I know it since, as I write, I’m still waiting
for the repairman. Gads! Stay cool out
there, folks 😊
But don’t
rush off before checking out my battle results – as well as everyone else! We
truly appreciate all participants, voters, and anyone who had anything to do
with the songs that give us something to talk about each month!

In honor of the Fourth
of July, we dodged the last- minute traffic and hit the road for the mountains before
the half-day workers had a chance to fill out their PTO forms, while the blacktop
temperature was still just below that of molten lava.
The song I’ve chosen
for this month’s Battle of The Bands is from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
first album and while it was never really a hit, it was undeniably one of their
most popular songs. Despite the urban myth about the song being about a
suicidal young woman, Petty said it was not. He also said it wasn’t even as
patriotic as many assumed, though the track was cut on the 4th of
July. Whether Tom Petty meant it as patriotic or not, it works for this
American Girl! Here’s a reminder if you
need it:

Many thanks to everyone who stopped by to vote on one of my favorite summer songs! While My For
the Birds battles are not quite officially over, I couldn't resist a little summer celebration ;-)
Other battle
results are probably available (I’m a slowpoke) at the links located in the top
right column of this page.
Don't forget the Sunscreen...
Happy Father's Day to all you Dads out there! See you on the 1st of July!

Happy Summer, Happy June!
Some among us may be glad
to know June 5th is National Moonshine Day; it’s also National Rum
Punch and Iced Tea Month. Though, I’m not sure if you’re supposed to mix the
two or drink them separately ;-)
There are so many great
summertime songs that I had trouble deciding which to choose for this battle.
Since we’re already in the triple digits, the first hit single for Seals and
Crofts comes to mind, and I think a cool Summer Breeze would be just right for
now. I hope you do as well!
First up, Johnny Mathis
Next up, Jason Mraz
There you have it, folks!
Do either one of these covers strike your fancy? I’d love to read your thoughts
in the comment section below. Oh, and does anyone knowwhich musical instrument is known as the “King of
Instruments”?

It has come
to my attention (thank you, Stephen T.!) that in all the busyness of “best-laid
plans” for a quick trip to the mountains last month, I forgot to post the
results of my last battle! I apologize,
my friends. If not for all of you, your votes, and thoughtful comments, there’d be nothing but static echoes of stony silence here, at Landmark Sounds, and I sure wouldn’t want that. So, here’s how it all went down:
The song was “Every
Kinda People.” The contenders were the jiving Mint Juleps, who garnered a single vote (though not for lack of talent or trying), and Britain’s own sharp-dressed man, Robert Palmer, who easily snagged seven votes (including mine) for the win.
Thank you all for playing along!
Now, about
today: Hey, hi! Happy May! In honor of summer actually showing signs of showing
up, my song choice for this battle was written by George Harrison in 1969 after
he too, must have experienced a long winter ;-) As the story goes, he used Eric
Clapton’s guitar and “magical” inspiration provided by Clapton’s sunny garden ;-)
Song
title: “Here Comes the Sun”
Contender #1 Sheryl Crow
Contender #2 Richie Havens
